Favorite Time of the Evening

This is my favorite time of the evening. The chores are finished for the day, Ray's gone to sleep and now I have some time to myself. This is when my mind wanders through days past. Some are distant memories of time spent on my grandparent's farm.

I remember fertile harvests of corn, kale, pole beans, green beans, tomatoes, strawberries, grapes, and cucumbers. The hours granny and I spent breaking beans, blanching freezing and canning. Our endless conversations on everything and about everyone. When we ran out of things to say, that was ok too. She was someone you could feel good with even if you didn't do anything at all.

Sometimes I'd catch her extended glances my way. I could tell that her mind was drifting too. When I'd ask her what she was thinking, she'd share how much like her mother I looked. It pleased me because it pleased her.

Granny was a petite, soft-spoken and loving woman. She was never too busy and was always happy to see me. I felt safe, secure and loved in her presence.

She taught me how to garden, sew, crochet, and embroidery too. But most of all, she taught me how to live.

I will always cherish the time I had with her because the love and memories we shared will always remain with me.

  1. Hi Robin.
What a lovely, thoughtful rememberance of someone you thought so special. I hope my grandchildren will have fond memories of me (in another fifty or so years!) especially Eden.
She is very precious to me and we have such a good time together. I am writing a book for her recounting some of the times we have spent together and stories of her development and a childhood that is rapidly changing to womanhood.

  2. Oh, you nearly bring tears to my eyes. I, too, had an especially close relationship w/my little KY gr-ma. Everyone...gr-kids, nieces, nephews, neighbors...all called her Bigmom; that's a mystery b/c she only came up to my shoulders! I have often wished that my husband & daughters could have met her...well...someday, she'll be standing by The Throne to get a peek at us as we run into the arms of Jesus! A sweet, sweet reunion all around.

BTW...1) Thanks SO much for adding my button to your blog! How exciting. 2) My mom is from the West Libery/Wrigley area of KY & my dad's family moved from there to southern Ohio b4 he was born. KY is a very under-estimated, beautiful state.

    Blessings from Ohio...

  3. Hi Grandma & Marmee!

I'm glad you enjoyed the post about granny. She was, and will remain, my best friend forever. :)

That book is a great idea grandma, and one I know Eden's going to cherish all her life. I'm glad she has you.

Marmee, you're welcome! Your blog is so full of delightful information. Especially that letter to the anonymous poster. I was cheering as I read it. I know deep down it's the Islamic influences, homosexual activists and socialists in America who are driving the christian hatred in this country. We need to continue to speak up and speak out against this trend. America is a christian nation and will continue to be.

    Thank God! lol
